The Metropolitan Cathedral took nearly 3 centuries to build! The construction to begin the building started in the year of 1567 and finished in 1788. The building was dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. Unfortunately, the cathedral is slowly sinking into the ground. It is said that the reason for the sinking if because of the city's soft clay subsoil, the considerable weight of the cathedral which is 127,000 lbs., and the fact that the Cathedral was also built on top of pre-structures. The inside of the Cathedral consists of many famous and very old paintings. Along with many other huge churches throughout the world, the cathedral has catacombs underneath.
